Sorghum bicolor
Originally from Africa. Introduced as a forage, grain and sugar source. The prolific plants are desert hardy. Stalks are chewed for their sweet juices--children love them. Approx. 50 seeds/packet.
In the spring or with summer rains, broadcast seed and rake in, or plant 1/2 inch deep and 10 inches apart. Thin to allow space, as plants will tiller (sprout stalks from base).
A wind-pollinated annual, so varieties will cross. Bag seedheads with paper or cloth bags to protect them from birds. Strip dry seeds from stem and winnow.
