Pay it Forward this #GivingTuesday

"We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give."
--Winston Churchill

What is #GivingTuesday?

Giving Tuesday is a global day dedicated to giving. Since its founding in 2012, #GivingTuesday has inspired giving around the world, resulting in greater donations, volunteer hours, and activities that bring about real change in communities. Last year, more than 30,000 organizations in 68 countries came together to celebrate #GivingTuesday. We invite you to join us this Tuesday, December 1, 2015, to kick start the movement and to help get out the give.

How Can I Join #GivingTuesday?

It is very easy to be a part of this new tradition of generosity. Find a way for your family, your community, your company or your organization to come together to give something more. Help organize a fundraiser for your charity of choice. Organize a donation drive for people in need. Volunteer and donate pro bono hours to an organization in need of your skills. Get your local government officials to proclaim December 1, 2015 #GivingTuesday in your city or town. Celebrate community heroes and service leaders with your local press. Use your social media to be an ambassador of the giving movement. The possibilities are endless!

You can support Native Seeds/SEARCH on #GivingTuesday

The mission of Native Seeds/SEARCH is to conserve and promote arid-adapted crop diversity to nourish humankind. We strive to strengthen regional food security by preserving and growing the seeds to be distributed to traditional communities, gardeners, and farmers in the Southwestern U.S and northwestern Mexico. When you support us, you are taking part in this critical work. Since 1983, we have:

  • maintained 1,900 accessions in our seed bank; many of them rare or endangered,
  • partnered with local farmers, millers, and restaurateurs to revive the rare, ancient White Sonora wheat and brought it back to people’s kitchens and dinner tables,
  • donated more than 4,500 seed packets to Native American growers each year,
  • teamed up with Native farmers to increase seed production and distribution of traditional varieties to wider Native communities,
  • helped almost 300 underserved communities in the Greater Southwest region grow their own gardens so they have access to fresh and healthy food, and
  • trained over 300 students at our seed saving workshops so they can take part in the conservation efforts by saving, sharing, and producing their own seeds.
