Saguaro Harvest Shallow Basket - Tohono O'Odham
This finely coiled and stitched polychrome (4-color) basket is by Tohono O'Odham artist Laura Pablo. This Basket Bowl measures approximately 7.5 inches in diameter and 1.5 inches deep. It depicts the traditional annual Saguaro Fruit Harvest in early summer by the Tohono O'odham.
Plant materials are hand gathered from the Sonoran Desert for basket weaving. Interior green coils are native beargrass and the white, closed stitches around the coils are sun bleached yucca. The black plant material used for the pole is from Devil's Claw pod. A rare red material, yucca root, is used to represent the Native person gathering the red fruit on top of the saguaro. The saguaro is woven from green unbleached yucca. Keep away from sunlight to maintain color variations.
