Round Polychrome Saguaro Harvest Basket - Tohono O'Odham
This unique, handwoven polychrome basket by Julia Lewis measures approximately 8.5 inches in diameter. It represents the annual gathering of saguaro fruit by the Tohono O'Odham.
Plant materials are hand gathered from the Sonoran Desert for basket weaving. The green interior coils (warp) are native beargrass, the white closed stitches which surround the coils are sun bleached soaptree yucca, the green stitches which make the saguaro design are unbleached soaptree yucca. The fruit on top of the cactus is woven from red Banana Yucca Root and black Devil's Claw pod is used in the design for the people and poles used to gather the fruit.
