Lidded Large Desert Tortoise Sculptural Basket

This handwoven sculptural basket is by Tohono O'odham artist Fred Cruz from Sells, AZ. It measures approximately 7 inches from head to tail, body is 5.5 inches in diameter and 3.75 inches high. Lid removes for storage inside.

Plant materials are hand gathered from the Sonoran Desert for basket weaving. The interior green coils (warp) are native Beargrass and the white stitches (weft) woven around the coils are sun-bleached Soaptree Yucca, the green stitching is unbleached Soaptree Yucca. Lid trim and accents are in black Devil's Claw pod.
