This variety is native to the western U.S. (including Arizona), and is named for Meriwether Lewis, who documented it on his travels through the west.  It blooms sky blue with 5 petals from April - September.

Blue flax is drought resistant and tolerant of alkaline soils. It needs well drained soil and prefers full sun. It is useful in erosion control.

The seeds should not be eaten raw, but are tasty and edible when cooked.

Used for fiber. Plant fall to spring.

Wow!

I planted them last year and they all germinated and did incredibly well. Im in the low desert near Phoenix and i just put them under a medium-small mesquite with sandy/clay soil and barely supplemented them with water. I was surprised with how drought tolerant they are.

Blue Flax

I've found that no matter when Blue Flax seed is thrown out, it comes up when the season begins to cool down, fall time. They are delicate with fragile looking stem and leaf structure but are plenty tough and add a special spark of blue in the landscape.
