Bisbee Gray

V021

Vigna unguiculata.  Edna Weigel, an avid gardener and seed saver in Bisbee, AZ, selected and stabilized this variety after her Bisbee Black cowpeas showed an unintentional cross.  She found that they were even more productive in her garden.  Ransom Ranch, our partner farm east of Bisbee also had a tremendous harvest of these cowpeas!  From our Seed Bank Collection.

  • Origin: high desert, 5518' elevation
  • A warm season crop
  • Approx. 3.5g/25 seeds per packet.
  • Limit 3 packets.
  • $3.25

Great potential

Planted two packets of seed too late in summer for Zone 8b. Got good, even and rapid (4 days) germination (soaked 6 hours in spring-water); promising initial growth to 6-8 inches before lower late summer temps; heavy rain, and sun angle changed. trial plot was not a full sun position. Will be ordering again and try to plant earlier in year, April15, and in newly cleared/worked plot in full sun position.

Love this organization

What’s not to love! Keeping traditions alive, support the community, saving seeds and encouraging everyone to garden! It doesn’t get any better than these folks. Orders come quickly, questions are answered like they care…wow!
