Tabloncillo Perla

  • Zea mays. Also called Maiz Amarillo.  The ears have large, flinty yellow and orange kernels, many with white floury caps.  The plants grow 6 to 9' in height.   From Maycoba in Mountain Pima territory in the mountains of east central Sonora.  Traditionally planted with the summer rains in June and harvested in November. Tabloncillo means "little plank", which describes the shape of the wide flat kernels.  This race of corn was traditionally nixtamalized and used for posole or other purposes.  From our Seed Bank Collection.
