Barrio Grains is owned by Don Guerra, named one of the Top 10 Bakers in America and 2022 James Beard Award winner for Outstanding Baker, and owner of Tucson's Barrio Bread. "Don is committed to working with local farmers, chefs, and other food producers to strengthen the local grain economy and grow the local food network."
NS/S had been conserving White Sonora Wheat for three decades, when in 2012 we spearheaded a collaboration with bakers and farmers to revive its use as an option for baked goods. The project incentivized local farmers to grow this drought-tolerant, heritage grain and for bakers to bake with it. NS/S shared the seeds with local farmers who then shared the grain from their harvests with bakers, including Don Guerra, owner of Barrio Bread!
