Dawavendewa - Mini Canvas Prints
Mini canvas art prints by Hopi and Cherokee artist Gerald A.A. Dawavendewa of Fourth World Design feature Indigenous imagery, cultural themes, and designs inspired by the natural world.
Gerald grew up in the Hopi village of Munqapi, Arizona, and among Cherokee relatives in Oklahoma. His interest in art led him to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Arizona in Tucson. After graduating, he worked as an exhibit specialist at the Arizona State Museum and interned with the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian.
His internship led to the children's book The Butterfly Dance, which he wrote and illustrated. His artwork includes a Hopi mural in the Arizona State Museum's permanent collection, as well as the museum's official logo. In 1994, he created artwork depicting the cosmos that traveled aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour (STS-59). He also designed a series of panels featuring Indigenous imagery for the main staircase of the University of Arizona's Student Union.
Gerald is also the author and illustrator of Codex Taawa, available through Native Seeds/SEARCH.
