Mata Ortiz Pottery
Mata Ortiz pottery is internationally celebrated for its elegant forms, intricate hand-painted designs, and exceptional craftsmanship. Each one-of-a-kind ceramic piece is handmade, carved or incised, painted by the artist, and traditionally fired using cottonwood tree bark. Mata Ortiz is a small village in the state of Chihuahua, Mexico, less than 100 miles from the US-Mexico border. The pueblo has a population of approximately 2,000 people and is within the municipality of Casas Grandes in a wide fertile valley that has long been inhabited by Indigenous peoples. The ancient ruins of Casas Grandes are located nearby. Today, Mata Ortiz pottery is recognized worldwide for its artistry, precision designs, and deep connection to the ceramic traditions of northern Mexico. Because every piece is individually crafted, no two are exactly alike.
