NASR > Sesame

Benne (the Bantu word for sesame) was brought to America from East Africa in the 17th century during the slave trade era.  It was an essential medicinal and kitchen garden plant in the Colonial & Antebellum South.  Attractive to pollinators, and beneficial as a companion plant for corn and other summer crops. Sesame is also very heat and drought tolerant.
