    • Mexicans and Native Americans have revered this plant and have eaten it and brewed it for tea for centuries. The image of a prickly pear appears on the Mexican Silver Peso. According to a legend, as the Aztecs were being pursued by enemies, they encountered an eagle perched upon a prickly pear cactus. They believed this to be a sign of pending victory and settled on that site, the location of Mexico City today. Also according to a legend, while picking fruit from the prickly pear, Navajos left a strand of hair as a sacrifice to the Spirit believed to dwell in the plant.

Prickly Pear Cactus Fruit Tea: delightful and delicious

I used to buy this when in Tucson, and it was reliably lovely, hot or cold. It has a complex, refreshing flavor, and it is by far my favorite non-caffeinated tea.

I haven’t been able to return to Tucson during the pandemic, and the store where I used to buy them does not offer them online. So I was delighted to find Native Seeds Search sold it.

I bought it as a gift for a relative who is recovering from cancer and can’t have caffeinate. I knew she would receive a high quality product to comfort her when she couldn’t have coffee or black tea.
