  • Pisum sativum. O'odham Pea. A shelling pea grown for 300 years by O'odham farmers. Has been planted in commercial fields in rotation with cotton to reduce Texas root rot.  Shell out peas for fresh eating when they are quite young, or let dry on the plant and use for soup. From our Seed Bank Collection.

    • Origin: low desert, 2500' elevation
    • Alkali tolerant and very hardy
    • Can grow to 5 feet tall, requires support
    • Plant in the cool season in the low desert
    • Approx. 10g/50 seeds per packet.
    • Limit 3 packets.

Growing strong

I planted the seeds and had great germination. I think every seed has sprouted and the plants are now about a foot tall. They are growing strong. I have not seen any peas yet but am hopeful for a harvest. I selected them hoping they do well in our very hot and dry desert environment
