      • Phaseolus acutifolius. Also called W'pegi bawi. A red-brown bean from Menagers Dam, a Tohono O'odham community near the Mexican Border. Large for a tepary. From our Seed-Bank Collection.

        • Habit: some twining but not a vigorous climber

        *Tepary beans grow best in hot, dry regions with minimal water or irrigation. Overwatering (in any climate) will cause the plants to look very leafy and healthy, but they'll produce few, if any beans. If grown out of region, which is the desert Southwest, results may vary.

      Grown 2 years on rainwater only in NM

      We have grown these and another white variety on practically only rainwater in Northern NM. Given 2-3 supplemental waterings throughout the season when plants look very wilted. They are super productive and have grown in poor soil in 2 different locations. This year we planted them in waffle style basins which enhanced the amount of rainwater they received. We plant them at the beginning of July and are harvesting in mid September. Have not eaten yet because our first season was only a seed crop, but we love other teparies that we have eaten. Hope to be growing these for many years from our original seeds.

      Great service

      The seeds were beautiful and germinated perfectly. The plants were doing well—so well that the jackrabbits hopped into our 20” tall raised bed and ate every leaf! Time for a fence and we’ll try again next year!
