Cicer arietinum.  Chickpeas, or Garbanzo Beans, are an Old World legume that was introduced to the Southwest by the Spanish.  Native Americans and Hispanics historically ate the beans both green and dried.  This variety is dry-farmed in the fall, at the bottom of the Barranca del Cobre (Copper Canyon) in Chihuahua, Mexico.  From our Seed Bank Collection.

  • Origin: Low Desert
  • Plant in January-February in the low desert, or in early spring in cooler climates.
  • Prefers well drained soil and arid climates.
