    • Vigna unguiculata.  Collected in Nayarit, Mexico, which has a much more humid climate than the desert Southwest. Our partner grower in Georgia said this cowpea grows exceptionally well there, and its thick hull helps repel insects.  Extremely hardy and prolific, with small dark brick-red seeds. Excellent as green beans or shelled.  This variety did best for us in Tucson when grown in a flood irrigation situation to provide humidity.

This small hard cowpea requires scarification and a soak of a few hours to get good germination.  If cooking from dry beans, it also requires a longer cooking period than our other cowpeas.  From our Seed Bank Collection.

      • Origin: Low elevation, about 32' above sea level; tropical climate
      • Vines can grow to about 6', can be grown with or without support
