  • Lactuca sativa.  These large heads of bright green romaine have excellent flavor and keep their sweet crispness well into early summer, even in the low desert. This variety was bred in the Middle-east, so it's no wonder it does well in the heat. It also thrives in cool weather as other lettuces do. Very bolt resistant, and will grow back after being cut, as other romaines will do. We purchase this variety from U.S. suppliers. Not from our seed bank collection, but your purchase supports our conservation mission.

Takes the heat!

Grew a this thru fall and well into the early summer in Phoenix. It was in a planter so I was able to move it to a location that got afternoon shade when it was hot. Shocked at how well it tolerated the heat and it didn't get "hot"/bitter. Definitely a keeper!

Simply the best for the SW

I'm an heirloom gardener who is a fan of iceberg/crisphead lettuces but find them very difficult to grow in hot. dry, Kingman, AZ. Jericho and Red Salad Bowl are the two lettuce varieties that never let me down. Jericho has superb flavor, with the smaller leaves being sweet while the outer leaves never get bitter. It lasts longer (slower to bolt) than any other lettuce I've grown. It grows well in fall or spring and it's also pretty good at reseeding itself. It has earned a place on my "grow it every year" list.

Mediocre tasting lettuce

I'm sorry to have to say but even tho this variety of lettuce grew well in my winter garden, I was not impressed with the taste. Even supermarket lettuces taste better... so next time I'll try another variety.
