Gossypium hirsutum. Grown by the Akimel O'odham for food and fiber until 1900. Padre Kino noted the extensive cotton fields and use of the fiber for weaving into clothing and blankets. This variety, related to Hopi cotton, was maintained by the Field Station in Sacaton, Arizona, for many years under the name Sacaton Aboriginal. The O'odham planted cotton "when the mesquite began to leaf out." From our Seed Bank Collection.

Sacaton Aboriginal Cotton

I am honored to grow cotton from previous generations (centuries) as supplied by Native Seeds Search. The seed received has had good germination percentage. Having grown up on a cotton farm, I knew some things about cotton cultivation, but this is meaningful in deeper ways. I don't have many plants growing this year, but enough to harvest the seed as a "citizen seed saver scientist." I plan to study the staple length, and to display some opened bolls this fall at the Farmers Market where I promote seed saving as well as educating children about where our food and clothing comes from. Presently, large bolls are formed, and I eagerly await the harvest.

I have not planted the Sacaton Aboriginal as of yet, but I have planted a few of the melons. And I am happy with the order I received. I plan on ordering more seeds for the future.
