Abelmoschus esculentus. Beautiful red stems and pods and gorgeous showy flowers on hefty plants that can grow up to 7 feet in a long enough season. The young pods are tender and tasty and low in mucilage. An NS/S volunteer named Ed was given seed of this variety in the 1980's by a family who had grown it in Yuma, AZ for many years. Ed has since grown it in several different locations in Arizona and even in west-central Nevada, and it has grown beautifully in all those places. From our Seed Bank Collection.
