  • Salvia columbariae. These beautiful, spiky wildflowers bloom in the cool season and grow to about 2 feet. Chia flowers are an important source of nectar for bees and butterflies. Many species of birds, small mammals, and insects eat the seeds. Humans have used seeds to make pinole, atole and more. They are high in protein and Omega 3s.  

    • Annual, very readily reseeds itself
    • Usually found below 3600', but is known to sometimes grow in areas up to 6300'
    • Blooms March-April in the low desert
    • Native throughout the Southwest
