Guadalupe Melendez | Mata Ortiz Pottery

Born in 1987, Guadalupe Melendez began making pottery when she was 20 years old.
She works in the sgraffito style, where layers of paint are built up and then the designs are etched to reveal the color of the clay underneath. Her style is unique and readily identifiable. We love her use of beautiful birds from the desert southwest.
Mata Ortiz pottery is internationally known for its elegant form, precision designs and beautiful colors. Each pot is hand built, incised or carved and painted by the artist and then fired using cottonwood tree bark.

Mata Ortiz is a small village in the state of Chihuahua, Mexico, less than 100 miles from the US-Mexico border. The pueblo has a population of approximately 2,000 people and is within the municipality of Casa Grandes in a wide fertile valley, which has long been inhabited by indigenous people. The ancient ruins of Casas Grandes are located nearby.
All proceeds benefit both the artists and the mission to conserve arid-adapted seeds of the Southwest.
